Home Is Where The Art Is

Max Glimm, a communication designer and visual storyteller based in Hamburg, Germany. Being a multi-disciplinary creative, photography plays a big role in Max's creative process, from exhibition design to typography and print. The imagery he captures from his hometown conveys an aesthetic balance between eery and beauty, in the city's quiet hallow spaces.

When did you first start shooting film, and why do you still shoot film in the digital age?

A few years ago, my father gave me his old Rollei 35 S and Rollei 35 LED, and that’s when I started exploring the world of analog photography. Back then, I used to take many digital shots of the same subject – now I enjoy the limitations of film. I like consciously choosing one single frame, not seeing the result immediately, and embracing the unexpected. And of course, I love the look and grain of analog film.

How would you describe your photography style?

I usually carry a camera with me in everyday life and take snapshots of things or scenes that catch my eye. As I live in a big city, my photos often focus on urban sceneries and architecture.

What is your favorite theme or subject to photograph and why?

The huge harbor in my hometown Hamburg is a constant source of inspiration. There’s always something new to discover: The textures and colors, the ferries and ships, the cranes and the water.

What about the Rollei 35AF do you enjoy?

It’s so compact, you can take it everywhere. Compared to the older Rollei 35 models, the autofocus makes it even easier to take spontaneous shots. It’s fast, intuitive, and great for capturing everyday moments.

If you were to recommend this camera to one photographer, who would it be and why?

I'd recommend it to anyone who loves spontaneous street photography. The Rollei 35AF is a must-have for those who want to capture everyday life.

What is one film stock you’re looking forward to shooting with the Rollei 35AF?

I don’t stick to one film stock. I enjoy switching things up – each film creates a different mood, atmosphere, and look. That variety is part of the fun, so it’s hard for me to choose just one.
