How to Quickly Set Your Film ISO

Dear Friends of Rollei 35AF,

At the top of the camera, there's the mode selector: iso / flash / no flash / off.

Some of you may be curious about the function of 'iso'. Let’s explore what 'iso' does. When you get a roll of film, the ISO sensitivity is printed on the film. You need to let the camera know the ISO of your film so that the metering will adjust based on this setting.

After loading the film, you can take a few seconds to set your film ISO. Here’s how to do it:

Choose Your Film ISO
When you insert the film roll, the camera automatically detects the film’s ISO using its DX code. If there’s no DX code, the default ISO is set to 100.

The DX code reader defaults to the closest ISO speeds: 25, 50, 80, 125, 160, 250, 320, and 640. If you want to shoot at a specific speed, you’ll need to set the ISO manually.

How to Quickly Set the ISO of Your Film
It’s easy! To set the ISO manually, first select "iso" on the mode selector. Then, press the selfie button (next to the lens) to cycle through the ISO options on the OLED display. Stop when you see the desired ISO.

Sometimes, the camera may not read the DX code for a few reasons. That’s why manual ISO setting is available. Here are some reasons it might not read the DX code:

  • Plastic film rolls or self-rolled films
  • Scratches on the silver part of the film (the DX code area)
  • The back cover is not properly attached

However, these won’t affect the camera's performance or your shooting experience. You can even choose your ISO to create over- or underexposed photos for artistic effects.

Select Your Desired Film Speed (ISO)
To change the detected film speed, follow the same steps as in "How to Quickly Set the ISO of Your Film" ⇧ Remember, changing the ISO can lead to overexposure or underexposure.

Examples:

  • If you load ISO 100 film and set the ISO to 25, your pictures will be overexposed by +2 EV.
  • If you load ISO 100 film and set the ISO to 200, your pictures will be underexposed by -1 EV.

By overriding the ISO settings, you can customize your exposure based on your creative needs!

Warm regards,
Rollei 35AF Team
